Solar Sun Rings

Once again we are talking about new solar pool heating ideas. In the case it is the Solar Sun Rings. These have been around for a few years now with different manufacturers now selling different styles. They are all essentialluy the same, a plastic ring wrapped in plastic.

Do they work?

Well… yes they do heat your pool. Not very efficiently but the do heat your pool. A solar pool heating blanket is cheaper and much more effective way of heating your pool. They work on the same principle as the solar sun rings but they have air bubbles separating the top layer from the water. This greatly reduces the wind chill factor and heat loss due to evaporation.
A cheap way to heat your pool for the short term is to use black plastic, great for a party or once off and cost peanuts from bunnings. It is not a solar pool blanket but it is a cheap knockoff.

Beware any sites offering “product review” that sell the product. Some dodgy manufacturers place false product review to boost their star rating. I do think solar sun rings are one of these companies, read all reviews and decide for yourself.

Pool Water in Your Roof?

Only in America…

Some ideas are wonderful in concept but somewhat lacking in reality. This is one of those times. The concept of putting a heat pump in the roof cavity to use the excess heat to warm you swimming pool is a very good idea.

In reality however some factors which prevent Pools Plus Solar from pushing the idea are;

  • Putting pool water inside your roof cavity – what if it leaks?
  • The air movement inside a roof is not good, once initial air has cooled the system will lose efficiency
  • The noise of the air conditioner in your roof cavity is not “quiet” at all, similar to vacuum cleaner db rating
  • The size of the unit is not large enough for medium to large pools
  • Servicing of the unit is a nightmare and inspection is also a task
  • Many many more reasons.

I have listed a few reasons why solar pool heating or another type of pool heating is better suited and more efficient. The simple fact is pool heating has been developed over a 29 year period with many great inventions and innovations, this however is not one of them. We will continue to scour the globe in search of new and innovative pool heating ideas and list and review them on our site.

How to Repair a Pool Solar Heating System

Pool solar systems are predominantly strip matting systems in Western Australia which can be repaired and patched. Solar panels from the USA and other countries are much harder to repair and generally will need to be replaced. All leaks to pool heating need to be repaired ASAP to prevent damage from the pools chlorinated and salt water. This guide is to advise on how to repair an australian made solar pool heating system.

Repair a Leak in the Solar Matting

The solar matting is the long flexible strip made from either PVC or EPDM. If it is EPDM it will blacken the hands when touched, pvc will not. Each strip will have between 5 and 18 tubes per strip and will be either 10 cm wide or 15 cm wide For both types cut  20 cm along the length of the tube needing repair, separating it from the rest of the matting. Then slice the tube where the damage is found. For EPDM simply insert a joiner barb using silicone spray or pvc glue for lube. For PVC two lock in collars are needed to secure the solar matting to the barb.

Repair to a Solar Pool Heating Manifold

Manifolds come in a variety of styles and materials. The majority of the time they will need to be replaced if damaged as repair is not always possible. Most commonly cheap chinese imported manifolds are break down due to
Australia’s harsh climate and are impossible to repair and will need to be replaced by new Australian made pool heating manifolds or the same that was there(not recommended). If a single barb is broken it is possible to drill the solar manifold and insert a grommet and barb to repair the damage.  Australian made solar pool manifolds are either drill and grommet systems which can easily be repaired or a push in 10 in to 1 manifold which once again can easily be replaced by removing the old one and inserting the new one. For easy repair use pliers to remove the barb from the matting and insert ne barb / manifold. Avoid cutting as this can shorten the matting and make the task more difficult.

Repair to Solar Pool Heating Sensor

This is a common problem. Generally it is the roof sensor that will need replacing. This can be identified by the solar controller which will have an error code on it or read the roof temperature as 0. Identify the manufacturer of the controller as all sensors are different thermo resistors designed to match the pool solar controller. Repair is possible by cutting the old sensor from the speaker coaxial cable wire. the wire will be colour coded, be sure to match the existing colours to the new ones as they are polarity sensitive. Use silicone or heatshrink to weather proof the join to prevent shorting and incorrect readings.

Repair to Vacuum Break Valve

There are five different manufacturers of vac valves. Each is very different so best to call for advise as to how to solve the problem.

3 Reasons to Have a Solar Blanket

One thing every homeowner knows is that a pool is not cheap in any way. After buying a pool, the next step is to enhance the pool with different add-ons to make it more enjoyable. Among all the add-ons you can have to enhance your pool, a solar blanket is the best of them. Three reasons to get a pool blanket include;

Extending the Swimming Season

The primary reason why you should consider having a solar blanket is to heat your pool and maintain a comfortable 28 degree Celsius temperature 3 months of the year. If you have heard about pool heating systems, you might already know how they can cost $1,000′s . Solar blanket is a pool heating option which is very cheap, yet effective and can extend the swimming season for up to 2 months.
A solar blanket is used on the pool to cover it. By using a solar blanket, the heat from the sun is absorbed and transferred into the water. When temperatures drop during the day or overnight, the swimming pool retains its temperature and is comfortable to swim in due to the insulation properties of the pool blanket.
Even when you get a pool heating system installed in your home, it is recommended to have a solar blanket to reduce its running costs. Mostly all the pool heating systems run from electricity or gas. Even a solar heating system uses electricity to power the pump which drives the water to the collector. Hence, when you use solar blanket, you will need to use these systems at a minimum as the heat will be trapped and retained inside the pool.

Reducing Evaporation

During the hot season in Perth when temperatures soar, water from the swimming pool evaporates. And so, homeowners have to top up the levels every week. This can be really costly and can put a strain on the environment too. Using solar blankets can reduce up to 90% of the evaporation.

Easy Cleaning Of the Pool

Pool blankets reduce debris in the water and therefore reduces chemicals needed to oxidise the debris. They also reduce chlorine consumption and make it easier to keep your pool balanced.
Pools Plus Solar is a renowned company that sells high quality solar blankets to the people in Perth for the last 10 years. With a combination of a solar blanket along with a highly efficient pool heating system, you can make your swimming pool season proof and enjoy swimming throughout the year.
